There are a few failure modes of the tensioner. The most common is the roller bearing failing. Secondly, the tensioning arm can become lose over time, resulting in excess noise and eventual arm failure. Arm or tension failure could cause the serpentine belt become disconnected, leading to a loss of power steering, charging and air conditioning.
